How do community arts organizations remain financially sustainable while staying true to their mission and values?
In this Guild Essentials session, arts leaders explored one of the field’s most persistent challenges:
– Balancing organizational purpose with financial realities
– Navigating budgets, deficits, reserves, and governance responsibilities with limited financial infrastructure or formal training
Led by Lecolion Washington and Meghan Jasani of the Community Music Center of Boston, the conversation offered practical frameworks for understanding surpluses, operating and planned deficits, and building stronger financial partnerships with boards and leadership teams. Participants reflected on how transparent financial storytelling and shared accountability can support healthier, more resilient organizations.
The resources below (including presentation materials, and additional tools) are intended to help leaders continue these conversations within their own organizations and communities. We hope they provide practical guidance for aligning financial decision-making with long-term mission sustainability.
