The Community Music Center of Boston, an arts education nonprofit with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences, is seeking a motivated and student-centered private voice instructor to continue instruction for current and new voice students.
Job Summary
This is a great opportunity for candidates with demonstrated teaching experience who are looking for community, growth opportunities, and a compensation structure that also includes paid administrative time and paid professional development opportunities. The ideal candidate will have a inclusive and culturally responsive teaching style that reflects CMCB's three curricular pillars: Musical Artistry, Social-Emotional Development, and Cultural Inclusion. Additional teaching opportunities are available for candidates with the ability to play and teach multiple instruments and/or candidates who are interested in teaching in the public schools.
Status: Part time hourly, exempt
Start Date: ASAP or by early October 2024
Schedule: In person, 4-6 hours per week, Monday - Friday between 3:00PM-8:00PM (full or partial availability, at minimum three days preferred) with room for growth
Specific Responsibilities
Studio Management and Retention
- Teach students according to curricular guidelines
- Prepare students for performance events and opportunities
- Hold at least one studio recital during the school year
- Complete attendance in registration software accurately
- Maintain open and regular communication with parents/caregivers and students via email to support educational progress
Communication and Participation
- Attend Department meetings and the annual all-faculty meeting as scheduled
- Participate in department events, competitions, recitals, and concerts
- Facilitate student participation in musical opportunities

Job Qualifications & Requirements
Qualifications
Essential
- Must have Bachelor's degree in music performance/education with knowledge in the field of voice performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 2 years private teaching experience
- Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
- Interest in the following focus areas: Culturally Responsive Teaching, Creative Youth Development - Student Voice/Agency, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Availability in-person with maximum one pre-planned absence per semester
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Effective communication skills in conversing with students, families, and colleagues
- Demonstrated ability to actively listen to and learn from others
- Ability to adapt to individual needs of students and provide constructive feedback
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets)
Preferred
- Knowledge in a diverse range of styles
- Knowledge of early childhood voice pedagogies and general classroom management
- Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable
- Proficient to strong sight reading skills
- Experience teaching in a public school or community music school setting
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position must be able to to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time. They need to occasionally move around the space to access teaching supplies and instruments. They must also converse with students in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume. They may occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds.
