About Our Organization

Community Music School has an immediate opening for an experienced teacher to provide private lessons to students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. CMS is a nonprofit music school located in Allentown, PA with a satellite location in Reading, PA. This position is for our Reading studio.

Job Summary

Location: GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St, Suite 561, Reading, PA 19601

Position Type: Part-time employee

Instruments Preferred (not limited to): Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, Voice, Violin (and other strings)

Schedule: Weekday afternoons/evenings (preferably Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Friday). Occasional weekend afternoons as needed for student recitals and outreach events. Each instructor’s schedule is flexible, beginning with 1-3 days of teaching (5-15 hours per week), with the opportunity to increase depending on student demand and employee availability.

Pay: Starting at $32/hour, and up to $35/hour, based on education and experience.

Responsibilities

The specific job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide quality music instruction in a positive and professional learning environment
  • Develop and implement an individualized curriculum to motivate students to succeed, encourage positive habits, and develop as well-rounded musicians and learners
  • Work at a variety of levels teaching different musical skills to individuals or groups of all ages
  • Teach instrumental techniques, scales, sight-reading, music theory, and self-expression through music
  • Prepare and register students for music evaluations, auditions, and recitals
  • Attend regular faculty meetings and maintain clear communications with students, parents, and administration via phone, email, and online scheduling and billing system
  • Complete annual student progress evaluations

Job Qualifications & Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in music education, music performance, or related field
  • Teaching Experience: At least 1 year
  • Language: English; Spanish is a plus
  • Work Authorization: US Citizen, Permanent Resident
  • Proficiency in pedagogy and performance, preferably in piano, guitar, ukulele, and/or voice; other instruments are a plus
  • Ability to work flexibly and independently with a diverse student base
  • Basic technology skills: Google Suite (Mail, Meet, Forms), ability to access the teacher portal online or through the mobile app
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude, and a passion for teaching
  • Reliability while working without supervision
  • Preferred (not required): Ability to provide piano accompaniment for various instruments for student recitals and professional audio/video recordings

Required Clearances: In accordance with PA Act 153, CMS requires all employees to have or obtain child protection clearances and complete mandated reporter training. All required clearances and training must be current (within the last 5 years):

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprinting
