Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level. Each year Peabody stages nearly 1000 major public concerts and performances.

Job Summary

The Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute seeks a visionary leader to be appointed Associate or Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Education by July 1, 2020. Building on a long tradition of excellence in teacher training, the new Chair will heighten the program’s impact on our local and regional communities. 

The chair works to develop faculty, staff, and programs, oversee curricula, and budgets, facilitate Music Education department events, ensure compliance with accreditation standards. In addition to providing collaborative and visionary leadership for the department, duties will include teaching, mentoring, and advising graduate and undergraduate music education students. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate music education classes; supervise field experiences and student teaching; pursue an agenda of research, scholarship, and creative work consistent with the candidate’s expertise and interests in music education.  Finally, the new chair will be a strategic partner in collaboration with outreach efforts in and around the City of Baltimore.




  • PhD or DMA complete by July 1, 2020 in Music Education
  • Minimum three to five years successful experience as a music educator in public schools at the elementary level
  • Evidence and potential of scholarly research activity
  • Presentations at state, national, and/or international conferences on topics related to music education leading to articles in appropriate publications
  • Seven to ten years of experience teaching at the collegiate level
  • Specialty in general music preferred
  • Working knowledge of approaches to music education practice, theory and research
  • Record of professional/service activities in music education, such as board or committee service
  • Current professional memberships in organizations related to the field of music education
  • A demonstrated commitment to urban music education by embracing diversity in individuals, perspectives, and musical styles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
