For 55 years, Powers Music School has prided itself on providing superior instruction and performance opportunities for children and adults in Boston’s metro-west region. Founded on the core principle that everyone has the potential to participate in, enjoy, create, and develop a lasting love of music, our innovative programs serve more than 1,000 students on site each year, and thousands more attend one of our 100+ concerts and events throughout the year. With an annual budget of $1.6 million, we are in the midst of an exciting transformation, embarking on an ambitious plan to expand offerings, provide access to underserved constituencies, and position our school as a place of excellence, opportunity, and inspiration. From the very first Mildred Freiberg Piano Festival in 1964 that sparked the creation of our school, serving the community has always been part of Powers’ DNA. Now, we are expanding our impact with programs that meet the ever-changing demographic trends and needs of diverse constituencies throughout the region.
Powers Music School seeks an experienced conductor and educator with superior musical, administrative and interpersonal skills to lead and cultivate its premiere large ensemble. We seek a conductor who shares our vision of providing an exceptional environment for students to learn standard orchestral repertoire while building the musical, communicative, and social skills that are vital for performing with others. Comprised of approximately 25 students from Belmont and surrounding communities, the orchestra is augmented by two training orchestras, chamber ensembles, and the full range curricular offerings at Powers.
Reporting to the Director of Education and Community Programs,, The Music Director conducts weekly rehearsals from 3:00-5:00 pm each Saturday; Prepares the group for annual concerts in December and May, Holds auditions 3-4 days per year - currently in early June; works with the Directors of Powers’ String Orchestra and chamber program on concerts, audition scheduling, ensemble policies; Attends the school’s annual faculty meeting in September; Attends the annual piano concerto competition in February.
Job Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred in orchestral conducting, music education, or music performance; three years professional conducting experience, preferably some working with youth in an educational setting. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of appropriate orchestral repertoire for young musicians and demonstrate effective rehearsal techniques.
