About Our Organization

Apple Tree Arts, Inc. (ATA) is a nonprofit educational organization committed to “enriching our communities through the arts by providing high-quality performing arts education and experience for all ages, identities and abilities”. ATA is located in the historic town center of Grafton, a semi-rural community about 10 miles south of Worcester and 45 miles west of Boston. It rents space from the Town of Grafton in a beautifully renovated, former Town Hall, and provides a comprehensive program of private lessons, classes, ensembles and performance opportunities in music and theater. ATA is entering its 33rd year and currently serves 400+ students of all ages from Grafton and the surrounding communities with a faculty of 21 professional musicians.

Job Summary

The Music Director reports to and works in partnership with the Board of Directors, Business Director and Theater Director and is responsible for the development and operations of a holistic musical instruction and performing arts programming serving all ages.


  • Provide overall leadership for ATA music instruction and performing arts programming in partnership with Business Director, Theater Director and with the Board of Directors
  • Serve as the school’s primary spokesperson and liaison with the ATA community regarding music programing and strategic direction; develop positive relationships with students, families, donors, the public schools and other constituents in and around Grafton
  • Develop, evaluate, grow and manage a holistic approach to music arts programming, including but not limited to music instruction, recitals and performance groups.
  • Research, direct and provide oversight of outreach activities consistent with ATA mission
  • Collaborate with Events Director to develop music related events programming
  • Responsible for identifying, hiring and management of music faculty, staff and contract labor.
  • Attend Board meetings to keep the Board informed of all music programming. Work in partnership with Business Director to propose areas of growth and gain Board support as needed.
  • Work with the Board as well as the Business and Theater Directors to develop and implement strategic plans
  • Work with Business and Finance Directors to prepare an annual music programming budget and ensure that the school operates within the budget
  • Collaborate with the Business Director as needed in the hiring and supervising of faculty, evaluating and developing new programs
  • Promote and preserve ATA’s friendly, supportive atmosphere

Job Qualifications & Requirements

  • Substantial background in music performance, production and/or music learning environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to develop, manage and grow musical programming

  • Strong leadership capabilities and enjoys collaboration
  • Fundraising experience and donor relations a plus
