About Our Organization
Founded by philanthropist and filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will inspire current and future generations through the universal art of visual storytelling. The museum will present permanent collection and temporary exhibitions for diverse public audiences which will feature illustrations, paintings, comic art, photography, and an in-depth exploration of filmmaking (including storyboards, costumes, animation, visual effects, and more). Extensive education programming designed for all ages will explore innovative ways for visitors to engage with narrative art. Designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong and under construction in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, the museum will feature new public green space, state-of-the-art cinematic theaters, a research library, numerous spaces for onsite education, restaurants, retail, and event spaces.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is seeking a strategic, creative and visionary leader as its first Managing Director of Education to join the organization at a critical moment in its growth. Reporting to the Deputy Director as a key member of the senior leadership team, the Managing Director of Education will design, recruit and oversee a team of approximately 40 staff and will be responsible for conceiving, developing and implementing a wide range of diverse and innovative educational and public programs. The Managing Director of Education will provide leadership and direction for programs serving all audiences, including but not limited to, K-12 students, educators, scholars, families and the general public. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art aims to serve as a leader around issues of accessibility, diversity and inclusion in museum practice and the Managing Director of Education will be encouraged to champion experimental, inventive, and groundbreaking approaches to arts education.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about the role of arts education and arts engagement for people of all ages and circumstances and will be inspired by the opportunity to envision and build something new. As the Managing Director of Education will be charged with creating and inspiring the team to create original content connecting directly to the Museum’s collection, this individual should be a strategic, creative and out-of-the-box thinker who couples imagination with real-world application and the ability to implement and execute. An engaging and credible leader, the Managing Director of Education will have the ability to present, build support for, and inspire others around a vision and core values with enthusiasm and energy. As such, the successful candidate must be an experienced team leader and a compelling convener of people who can serve as a catalyst for mutually advantageous relationships throughout the organization and externally. The Managing Director of Education must be an outstanding, clear and persuasive communicator who encourages collaboration, growth, coordination, and integration between and among different interests and disciplines. A dynamic and entrepreneurial leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, the Managing Director of Education should be a natural relationship-builder with executive presence, practiced public speaking skills, and the ability to interact effectively and professionally at all levels. As the Managing Director of Education will be responsible for leading the building, piloting and growth of multiple programs simultaneously, ideal candidates will demonstrate aptitude in listening, organizing, structuring, gaining consensus, and moving forward on mission critical goals, objectives, and plans. The successful candidate will likely be a calculated, yet innovative risk-taker who possesses a sense of urgency and excitement for the work. A strong work ethic and a high degree of self-motivation, responsiveness, flexibility, integrity and emotional intelligence will be valued.
CAREER PATH LEADING TO THIS POSITION:
Leading candidates will have experience that demonstrates the ability to conceptualize, design, plan, implement, administer and evaluate diverse and wide-reaching programs. Although the successful candidate will most likely have leadership experience in museum education or other educational enterprises within a cultural institution, it is also possible that the individual could come from another career background and demonstrate an aptitude for creative program design and possess a compelling passion for narrative arts and visual culture. A proven ability to manage people, programs and budgets is essential and expected.
A Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Annual compensation will be competitive and relocation assistance, if needed, is negotiable. A comprehensive benefits package will be provided.
Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following areas:
- Program Leadership. Working closely with Curatorial leadership as well as Museum Experience leadership, provide strategic leadership and direction to staff in the development and operation of all educational programs. Build relationships internally across departments in furtherance of the Museum’s educational mission and vision. Ensure that all educational programs are characterized by innovation, impact, and high quality and are connected to the diverse communities of Los Angeles.
- Team Leadership. Build a cohesive, team-oriented work environment and culture that is fully integrated into the Museum’s institutional operations, goal setting and long-term initiatives.
- Administration. Develop, manage, and direct the work of the education division. Oversee programs, projects, and other activities, monitoring quality, content, budgets, and outcomes. In addition to supervising program staff, collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the organization on planning, fiscal and project management, operations, and staff performance assessments and accountabilities. Participate in the development and implementation of museum-wide goals, policies and procedures.
