Founded in 1976 in memory of Selma M. Levine, a prominent Washington attorney and amateur musician, Levine Music (originally the Levine School of Music) has been the preeminent center for music education in the Washington, DC metro region for more than 40 years. Levine Music provides a welcoming community where children and adults find lifelong inspiration and joy through learning, performing, listening to, and participating with others in music. Levine Music’s distinguished faculty offers a broad and well-rounded curriculum that provides a strong musical foundation for students of all ages, abilities, and interests. Levine Music strives to make music education available to everyone who wants to study and enjoy music, regardless of age, ability, or financial means and is grounded in the foundational pillars of education, performance, and community.

Levine Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and is an All-Steinway community music school. Levine Music is also certified by the National Guild for Community Arts Education as exemplifying the highest standards of excellence and access in community arts instruction.

Levine Music moved into its permanent home (Sallie Mae Hall) in 1997. The former Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution in Northwest Washington, this 35,000 square-foot facility in Northwest DC underwent a $6M renovation following its purchase in 1992. It is home to 30 teaching studios; the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Library and Information Center; the Jane Lang Recital Hall, a 150-seat flexible performance space; and the James L. Kunen Theater, which contains the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Recording Center.
Additional campuses were established in Southeast Washington; Kensington, Maryland; and Arlington, Virginia in the late 1990s. Levine Music’s Maryland campus relocated to the Music Center at Strathmore in 2005, joining in partnership with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Strathmore, Washington Performing Arts, the National Philharmonic, CityDance Ensemble, and Montgomery Classic Youth Orchestras. Levine Music became the primary education provider for the Music Center at Strathmore. An additional campus in Silver Spring, Maryland was established in the fall of 2016.

In May 2005, Levine Music moved its Southeast campus in Washington to Town Hall Education Arts and Recreation Campus (THEARC), a $35 million state-of-the-art community center. In addition to housing Levine Music, THEARC is home to branches of the Children’s Hospital Wellness Clinic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Covenant House, The Washington Ballet, The Corcoran School of Art and Design, Parklands Community Center, Trinity University, and Washington Middle School for Girls, all of which are committed to serving children, at-risk youth, and their families.

Levine Music is governed by a 37-member Board of Trustees. Peter Jablow is CEO and Stanley Spracker is President; they lead an administrative staff of 36. Levine employs 180 faculty members who teach in a variety of concentrations, including: piano, woodwinds, brass, strings, guitar, chamber music, early childhood music, jazz, rock, composition, music theory, music therapy, musical theatre, and Suzuki methods.

Job Summary

The Head of Music Education will lead Levine Music’s comprehensive course offerings and programs that reach 3,500 students each week at Levine’s five campuses throughout the greater Washington, DC region. S/he will have the opportunity to develop and implement a strategic vision for curricula and programming that reflect the needs and interests of a diverse student body of all ages and abilities. The Head of Music Education will support and advance Levine Music’s focus on pedagogy and commitment to the highest musical standards.


The Head of Music Education is a member of Levine Music’s Executive Team and reports to the President. In partnership with the President, s/he sets educational priorities for the organization and participates in defining and achieving the overall strategic objectives of Levine Music. The Head of Music Education chairs the Faculty Council, comprised of the Department and Program Chairs, which serves as a clearinghouse for educational and programmatic innovation. S/he supervises a faculty of 180 artists and educators. The Head of Music Education builds strong relationships among key stakeholders, including students, parents, Trustees, donors, faculty, and local business, and civic leaders. S/he attends the meetings of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee.

The Head of Music Education serves as the primary institutional resource for best practices in music education. S/he articulates a vision for music education that includes innovative programming, faculty development, and pedagogical excellence. S/he creates and supports new classes and programs as part of Levine Music’s overall strategic plan. S/he creates and leads a strategic plan for the pedagogical use of technology. S/he utilizes technological tools that enhance weekly lessons and afford new opportunities, including online classes, to reach students beyond Levine’s walls.

The Head of Music Education leads Levine Music’s faculty recruitment, retention, and evaluation practices. S/he provides guidance and support to the Faculty Chairs and develops a diverse teaching faculty. S/he creates an environment of transparency and open communication among staff, faculty, students, and parents.
The Head of Music Education develops, monitors, and adjusts budgets related to faculty and educational programming. S/he builds and maintains partnerships with other arts organizations locally and regionally.
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an experienced manager with at least ten years’ successful experience working in music and music education, preferably at a community music school. S/he will be familiar with music pedagogy across a spectrum of ages and ability levels.

The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of musical genres and educational approaches. S/he will be familiar with community music school structures. S/he will have experience fostering an environment that encourages students and families to make a multi-year commitment to music education.

Experience managing faculty is preferred; the ability to interact comfortably with parents and with students of all ages, infant through adult, is required.

The successful candidate will be an effective manager with experience leading teams and working with colleagues in senior management positions to build consensus and achieve common goals. S/he will have the proven ability to work with diverse populations and a broad range of personalities. S/he will have the skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, faculty, students, and parents.

The successful candidate will be an effective problem-solver and adept at managing competing deadlines and priorities. S/he will be an enthusiastic self-starter and an effective listener. S/he will have a healthy sense of humor and value clear communication. S/he will be able to embrace a work schedule that includes evening and weekend commitments. A Bachelor’s degree in music or music education is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
