Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level. Each year Peabody stages nearly 1000 major public concerts and performances.

Job Summary

Reporting to and under the general direction of the Associate Dean for Innovation, Interdisciplinary Partnerships and Community Initiatives, this full-time position is responsible for supporting community-based activity embedded in and emanating from Peabody Conservatory’s Breakthrough Curriculum.  In addition to building community partnerships and mentoring Conservatory faculty and students for community projects and collaboration, this position also supports the identification and development of new community programming through the Preparatory.



Essential Duties:

  • Develop, cultivate and maintain community partnerships in collaboration with the Associate Dean.
  • Demonstrate/model best practices in mentorship and community partnership.
  • Liaise across Peabody offices including Business, Concert Operations, Academic Affairs, Preparatory, Student Affairs, Career Services, Development, and Communications as needed to facilitate community partnerships and programs.
  • Serve as the United Way Coordinator for Peabody in partnership with the university initiative.


Specific Duties:


  • As member of LAUNCHPad team, mentor and train students as needed in community-based projects and programs:
    • Develop community engagement curriculum/resources and teach courses as required (separate teaching contract will be issued for any classes taught).
    • Provide support for faculty members engaged in community-based activities.
    • Provide support and mentorship for faculty teaching community engagement curriculum.
    • In collaboration with LAUNCHPad director as appropriate, work with Conservatory faculty to communicate opportunities and solicit student participants for community-based projects.
    • Research and develop new continuing education/professional development and community-based Preparatory programming in collaboration with Director of the Prep and Associate Dean.
    • Oversee a portfolio of local and national community engagement fellowship and residency opportunities (manage partnerships, select and support students, manage budgets and funding).
    • In collaboration with LAUNCHPad staff, oversee external Work Study partnerships.
    • Produce a portfolio of JHU- and community-based projects in collaboration with LAUNCHPad staff.



  • Document community activities and provide program information as requested by Development, Communications and Dean’s offices.
  • Produce regular communication for internal and external constituents on community programs in collaboration with Associate Dean and Project Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with Development office on donor and grant identification/matching.
  • Manage student and external inquiries emanating from Peabody website and LAUNCHPad office as needed.
  • Serve as Peabody delegate on JHU and community committees and boards.
  • Serve as Peabody representative to national community arts organizations.

Job Qualifications & Requirements


  • Proven ability to partner with faculty, staff, and community organizations to build program.
  • Track record of consistently excellent customer service to both internal and external constituents.
  • Proven ability to deliver best practices in community engagement work.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in the resolution of problems and to exercise independent initiative in project development and research.
  • Knowledge of Baltimore’s cultural and community organizations.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement necessary processes, procedures, systems, courses, performances, projects.
  • Proven ability to create and manage new programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in a culture of change and proven ability to provide non-standard, non-routine work.


  • Bachelors degree plus at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in building and running program in community arts.
  • Performing arts background.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Mentoring experience.
  • Production management experience with arts organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters, DMA or PhD in music or a relevant subject area.
  • Experience working in a performing arts school or similarly specialized setting in higher education.
