KID smART engages children and educators in dynamic, creative, and relevant learning through the arts.  We work to support students, teachers, and schools through year-long collaborative artist residencies and professional development for teachers.  KID smART teaches to the whole child, engaging students in learning through the arts and helps teachers change their pedagogy to include the arts. 

Job Summary

Job Description:  Communications Manager

The Communications Manager is in charge of overseeing all internal and external communications, ensuring that KID smART’s messaging is consistent, engaging, and aligned with our values of collaboration, creativity, equity, and sustainability. 

We are seeking a visual and written content storyteller to work in close collaboration with the Executive Director, Board, Staff, and volunteers. The Communications Manager will develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan to meet the organization’s engagement and financial needs.  In addition, the Communications Manager will be responsible for initiating and leading external-facing communications, representing KID smART in a community relations role at events, and conducting presentations on behalf of the organization.  


General Functions

  • Create and manage overall organizational communications plan

  • Maintain 18-month institutional marketing calendar and monthly marketing report

  • Facilitate biannual Communications Committee meetings


Marketing and Public Relations

  • Market programs to potential partners and clients for earned income

  • Create and manage e-blasts and e-newsletters

  • Collaborate with Development/ Education/ Executive Director on print newsletters and mailings

  • Maintain social media presence and grow audience to meet annual goals

  • Develop press connections

  • Craft and submit press releases to local, regional, and national outlets

  • Support KID smART fundraisers with marketing, PR, and on-site support

  • Assist with Arts Education Alliance communications (e-blasts, social media, press)


Technology and Graphic Design

  • In-house design of internal and external communications including in-school visibility materials, newsletters, programming and fund development collateral, advertisements, reports, etc. 

  • Photograph KID smART programming and events for use in marketing collateral

  • Update website in partnership with Development and Executive Directors

  • Work as primary contact with designers, videographers, web developers, etc. as needed for projects


Program Support

  • Manage visibility and documentation for Creative Schools including blog, school newsletters, posters, banners, yard signs, etc.

  • Support Teaching Artists with technology and documentation

  • Support KID smART programmatic events as needed

Job Qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • B.A. in communications, marketing, or a related field and/or 5+ years related experience

  • High level proficiency with Google Workspace, Google Ads and Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress/Divi, DSLR cameras, and video editing software + a fearless and efficient approach to new programs, software, and equipment.

  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • High affinity and passion for the organization’s mission and willingness to learn the principles of arts integration and the KID smART theory of change.

  • Detailed, organized, goal oriented, enthusiastic, and collaborative individual with a proven capacity to work in a fast paced office while exercising independent judgment and maintaining a joyful approach to projects.


KID smART is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic staff committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Development Director, Program Manager, and Board. 

Additional Details

This is a full time, in-person position with a competitive salary range of $47,000-$55,000. Benefits include fully paid health, dental, and vision insurance, 17 paid holidays, matching IRA, annual PD budget, and generous accrued PTO.
