About Our Organization

Apple Tree Arts, Inc. (ATA) is a nonprofit educational institution committed to “enriching our communities through the arts by providing high-quality performing arts education and experience for all ages, identities and abilities”.

ATA is located in the historic town center of Grafton, a semi-rural community about 10 miles south of Worcester and 45 miles west of Boston. It rents space from the Town of Grafton in a beautifully renovated, former Town Hall, and provides a comprehensive program of private lessons, classes, ensembles and performance opportunities in music and theater.

ATA is entering its 33rd year and currently serves 400+ students of all ages from Grafton and the surrounding communities with a faculty of 21 professional musicians.

Job Summary

The Business Director reports to Board of Directors and works in partnership with the Theater Director and Music Director. He/She/They are responsible for managing a $600,000 budget and supervising an operations staff of 3-5 people. This is a full-time position. 


•    Provide overall leadership for ATA business and financial operations in conjunction with the Board of Directors
•    Serve as the school’s primary spokesperson and liaison with the donor community; develop positive relationships with students, families, donors, the public schools and other constituents in and around Grafton
•    Provide all HR related functions including, but not limited to onboarding, payroll, CORI checks, tax documentation, organizational policies, and procedures, etc.
•    Oversee day-to-day business activities, student enrollment/registration and facilities management
•    Keep the Board informed of all financial and operational issues and work with the chairperson to facilitate the involvement of all Board members and the effective functioning of all Board committees
•    Work with the Board and Program Directors to develop and implement strategic plans
•    Provide oversight and leadership in fundraising activities; manage marketing efforts
•    Prepare an annual budget and ensure that the school operates within the budget
•    Collaborate with the Music and Theater Directors as needed in the hiring and supervising of faculty, evaluating and developing new programs
•    Develop office and personnel policies; direct staff as needed
•    Promote and preserve ATA’s friendly, supportive atmosphere

Job Qualifications & Requirements

•    Strong background in business and program management and/or experience in a music or theater learning environment
•    Exceptional interpersonal skills
•    Proven ability to manage a range of administrative tasks, including fiscal, technical and personnel issues
•    Demonstrated ability in public speaking, written and oral communications
•    Strong leadership capabilities and enjoys collaboration
•    Fundraising experience a plus, especially in the area of grant writing
•    Commitment to providing leadership around diversity, equity and inclusion
•    High level of enthusiasm for the mission of ATA
