Arts Management in Community Institutions
Established in 1985 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the AMICI (Arts Management In Community Institutions) Training Institute was an intensive professional development program tailored to the needs of key administrators and leaders in the field of nonprofit, community based schools of the arts. This annual Institute was the most comprehensive of its kind in the United States, and ran through the final class in 2005.
The goal of the AMICI Training Institute was to help develop comprehensive leadership and management skills. AMICI addressed the theory and practice of nonprofit arts management. Each student developed a comprehensive range of practical skills, discussed and applied these skills to his/her own local setting and institution, and increased his/her knowledge of available resources and networks within the field. Participants increased their understanding of the history and significance of community arts education enabling them to make informed decisions shaping the future of their organizations and their communities.
AMICI’s flexible and interactive approach allowed participants to learn at their own pace and style. The Institute guest faculty consisted of leading practitioners and experts who presented each topic through a variety of teaching techniques including formal classes, individual mentoring, group problem-solving, breakout discussions and analysis of case studies.
A particularly valuable feature of the program was the opportunity it offers to personally network with experts in the field of community arts education. To ensure a high student to faculty ratio, no more than 25 students were accepted each year.
AMICI was designed to benefit professionals who were:
"My Board President and I both attended the AMICI Institute and came away immensely grateful for the superb instruction and resources we received from the participants and presenters."
Christopher Donahue, Co-Founder/Director
East Nashville Center for the Creative Arts
“As President of a young but quickly growing organization, I left AMICI with an understanding and confidence with budget and personnel issues. What I learned beyond that was a treasure: about community, professional development, organizing, governing, funding, marketing, and advocacy...AMICI is the most compact, comprehensive quality arts management experience I have been able to find.”
Anne Green, President
Michigan Shakespeare Festival, Jackson Community College, Jackson, MI
"The AMICI program provided instruction, examples, and lots of practical material for study and application. I am sure that we will be making daily use of it for the coming year and probably for several years to come.”
Carol Harkins, Director
The Gene Nastri School of the Arts, Everett, WA
