Progressive Arts Alliance (Cleveland, OH), an organization that operates as an arts-integration lab serving the needs of students, teachers and the community, will be on display March 7-10 at SXSWedu Conference & Festival showcasing its Clouds curriculum (#paaclouds on Twitter), which allows students to create sculptures of clouds that are illuminated by Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). PAA is the only organization from the Midwest in the conference’s Playground Displays.

Clouds was designed by PAA Artist-Educators Ainsley Buckner and Ben Horvat. The curriculum was implemented and refined during in-school residency workshops at Mound STEM School in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). The project-based learning curriculum for Clouds is designed to meet content standards in earth and space science, physical science, and fine arts. Through this project, students use conventional tools and materials in nonconventional ways as an exploration in merging their core curriculum content with the fine arts.

“Our team of artist-educators are committed to innovating how arts-integration can transform the teaching and learning experience for students and teachers,” said Santina Protopapa, founder and executive director, Progressive Arts Alliance. “SXSWedu is a tremendous opportunity for us to share one of our exemplary projects and engage with conference participants from around the globe so that we may continue to advance and innovate how students are taught 21st century skills through contemporary arts and media.”

About Progressive Arts Alliance

Since 2002, Progressive Arts Alliance (PAA) has been innovating how students are taught 21st century skills through contemporary arts and media. PAA operates as an arts-integration lab—constantly iterating, learning and evolving to deliver the most relevant programs for the needs of students, teachers, and the community. PAA’s staff and artist-educators create and deliver customized, project-based learning programs and real-time professional development training that respond to current educational trends and priorities, such as STEM, the Maker Movement, and social emotional learning.
