A new feature length documentary film by Karina Epperlein, titled Finding the Gold Within, explores the influence of Alchemy, Inc., on the lives of six black men from Akron, Ohio. The documentary follows these six young men through their first two years of college. As part of the Alchemy program, we listen to them speak of their disappointments, despairs, trials, and triumphs with a disarming honesty.

Alchemy, Inc. and its leaders have been working in the school system in the Cleveland area, mentoring young black urban youth from middle through high school. Exploring ancient mythological stories from diverse cultures, as well as drumming and writing, this innovative program gives the youth a chance to grow into self-knowledge, discipline, and confidence.

The film will premier at the Mill Valley Film Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area on October 3. Learn more at www.GoldTheFilm.com.

About Alchemy, Inc.
Alchemy, Inc. is an exemplary nonprofit organization that develops and supports Akron, Ohio area urban adolescent males in nontraditional ways; primarily through the telling, discussion, and analysis of mythological stories and fairy tales.  The analysis of these myths is designed to increase the Social & Emotional Learning of our participants.  Since its inception in 2003, it has worked with over 1,500 male youth in a group setting.  In 2012, Alchemy was selected as one of 12 recipients of the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award—the nation’s highest honor for after-school and out-of-school programs.  At the same time, San Francisco-based Oscar short-listed film producer, Karina Epperlein, decided to produce a film about some of Alchemy’s participants who have been part of the program since sixth and ninth grade, and their journeys through their first two years of college. Finding the Gold Within powerfully illustrates how the lessons they've learned within Alchemy have shaped and prepared them for all dimensions of their lives. The film is expected to be distributed at film festivals in late 2014 and to public television outlets in 2015.
