Guild members recently partnered with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) to present the biennial Chicago Youth in Music Festival, Jan 14 – Feb 4, 2013. The festival was led by the CSO’s Institute for Learning, Access and Training, in partnership with many of Chicago’s leading organizations in music education. Partnering organizations included the following Guild members: Chicago Children’s Choir, People’s Music School, Merit School of Music, Music Institute of Chicago, DePaul University Community Music Division, Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago, Hyde Park Suzuki Institute, and Suzuki-Orff School of Music.  The Festival’s primary goal is to extend and deepen the engagement of youth in music by enhancing musical training and providing opportunities for youth from different parts of the city—and the world—to come together to make music. It also aims to foster critical mass and visibility among Chicago’s youth music providers and to strengthen ties between Chicago’s youth music providers and counterparts both nationally and internationally. Joined by a dedicated group of mentors from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA)—the Festival’s international guest youth ensemble—young musicians participated in a series of intensive rehearsals and workshops in preparation for appearances onstage at Orchestra Hall and in neighborhood locations around the city and suburbs. Collaborative performances and special events were held at many of the partnering organizations listed above, as well as at Chicago West Community Music Center. The involvement of Guild members and other leading music education providers helped to strengthen Chicago’s musical community and nurture a culture of collaboration.
