The Board of Directors of Neighborhood Music School (NMS) announced this March that Dan Gurvich, an experienced non-profit leader and administrator, has been named executive director of the school.

Most recently Gurvich served as chief operating officer of Person-to-Person, a multi-site emergency response social services agency in Fairfield County. In addition, he is executive director of College Audition Advantage, a training program for students auditioning for elite undergraduate programs in musical theater and vocal performance. Previously he was chief financial officer of CUVS, a for-profit subsidiary corporation for Cornell University.

In announcing the appointment, Marc Rubenstein, chair of the NMS Board of Directors, said, “We are excited to bring Dan on board, both for his remarkable achievements and leadership experience and as someone who can build on NMS’s legacy of innovation and outreach.”

Gurvich holds a MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson School, a master of music degree in classical vocal performance from Boston University and a BA from the State University of New York at Geneseo. Deeply committed to arts education, he taught vocal technique, musicianship, diction, and stagecraft to undergraduate and graduate students at New York University's Steinhardt School.

“As a former professional singer and educator, I passionately share NMS’s commitment to high quality arts education for all. This commitment is particularly important for low-income students and others who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the arts. Academic studies are now validating scientifically something that many of us have already been fortunate to experience in our own lives - the transformative power of training in the creative arts," said Gurvich of NMS and his new position.

Gurvich succeeds Lawrence Zukof, who served as executive director for 18 years. Gurvich will begin May 1. Noah Bloom, director of programs since 2012, served as interim executive director during the search.

About Neighborhood Music School
Neighborhood Music School, established in 1911, is one of the 10 largest community arts schools in the country. NMS offers private music instruction on more than 30 instruments (including voice); group music and drama classes; classical, rock and jazz ensembles; and a Suzuki program. The school’s dance program offers classes for adults and children in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop and yoga. NMS also offers a state-licensed, arts-based preschool for two, three and four year olds. NMS programs are made possible in part with support from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, along with many other generous foundations and individuals.
