On Thursday, March 15, Justice Sonia Sotomayor hosted a Celebration of the Sphinx Medals of Excellence at the U.S. Supreme Court. The Sphinx Medals of Excellence honor emerging Black and Latino leaders in classical music who demonstrate the following qualities: excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and great potential for leadership. In attendance were Justices Ruth Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, as well as Guild executive director, Jonathan Herman, and Guild trustees Lowell Noteboom and Afa Saykhyl Dworkin, vice president of programming at the Sphinx Organization. The celebration included a private tour of the Supreme Court, musical performances, and the awards presentation. Anthony McGill, Elena Urioste, and Tai Murray were presented with the medals. These artists represent the finest caliber of musicianship, extraordinary career achievements early on their respective musical journeys, as well as spirit of leadership, determination and commitment to artistic excellence.
