Fleisher Art Memorial (Philadelphia, PA) and the American Federation of Teachers have partnered with the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee to launch the We the Young People Art Contest. The contest invites young people from across Pennsylvania to depict a version of the convention theme, “We the People.”

"Our nation's commitment to freedom of expression has produced transformative art from a wide variety of disciplines for hundreds of years. I believe that the strength of our communities rests on the vision of democracy that is articulated by our youth," said the Rev. Leah D. Daughtry, the convention's CEO. "Young people in Pennsylvania are uniquely aware of the values upon which this nation was founded."

Fleisher will gather the contest submissions and judge the first round. The art pieces will then be narrowed to a list of 57 finalists that will be passed on to a panel selected by the DNCC.

"We are honored that the Democratic National Convention is engaging youth from Pennsylvania in such a dynamic and artistic manner," said Elizabeth Grimaldi, executive director of Fleisher Art Memorial. "As the country's oldest community art center, we are committed to ensuring that art is accessible to everyone and that it continues to be represented in every chapter of our history."

About Fleisher Art Memorial

Every year, more than 17,000 people experience the transformative power of art by participating in Fleisher’s studio classes, exhibitions, and community based programming.  Fleisher is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing the vision of our founder, Samuel S. Fleisher, who believed that art is one of society’s greatest assets and equalizers, and from the doorway of his Graphic Sketch Club, “invited the world to come and learn art.”
