Priscilla Kane Hellweg, executive director of Enchanted Circle Theater (Holyoke, MA), recently spoke with Anita Walker, executive of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), on Creative Minds Out Loud, a podcast produced by MCC. The discussion touched on the work of Enchanted Circle, how the organization integrates into public classrooms, working collaboratively with social services, and more.

Discussing why the arts are such a valuable tool, she argues that it’s because it makes “learning relevant, and makes learning personal. In everything we do, we are working on creative expression and artistry, [which] is one channel. We are working on academic understanding and comprehension, and unpacking knowledge, [which] is the second channel. And the third channel is communication, and 21st century skills of collaboration, and listening, and self-efficacy, and creating a whole person. And so it’s the dynamic between those three things that makes whatever we’re doing, makes people get invested and involved and hooked.”
