On Monday, May 16, Karen LaShelle, executive director of Creative Action (Austin, TX) and a Guild Ambassador, worked with SAY Sí (San Antonio, TX) and the National Guild Ambassador Program to further the national conversation about the growing field of creative youth development (CYD). The event brought together over 40 local arts education leaders to discuss the CYD movement, observable qualities of effective CYD programs, and how to sustain programs on an ongoing basis.

Speakers at the event included Heather Ikemire, director of program and membership strategy for the National Guild, and Nicole Amri, program director at SAY Sí. The presentation covered information on the basic tenants of CYD but it also highlighted the work of youth participants. Youth from Say Sí prepared a spoken word performance and participants in Creative Action’s programming shared a series of short films.

About Creative Action

Through interactive classroom performances, after school arts residencies and community-based programs, Creative Action’s team of professional Teaching Artists inspire youth to be Creative Artists, Courageous allies, Critical Thinkers, and Confident Leaders. Creative Action believes that when youth develop their creativity, compassion, confidence and critical thinking skills, and build meaningful connections with peers and positive role-models, they become successful adults who contribute to their communities and thrive in their careers and relationships.

About SAY Sí

Serving San Antonio’s youth, SAY Sí is a year round, long-term, non-profit multidisciplinary arts program that provides students opportunities to develop artistic and social skills in preparation for higher educational advancement and professional careers.
