Colburn Recognized for its Transformative Art Camps

KCET, a Southern California-based broadcasting group, recently highlighted Summer Encounter, a two-week performance camp produced by the Colburn School (Los Angeles, CA). Now in its 15th year, Summer Encounter provides students from Title I schools in Los Angeles with access to intensive arts programming—in some cases providing more exposure to the arts than the students will receive the whole rest of the year.

“This is a chance for kids to have really meaningful engagement with the performing arts at an age when it can make a tremendous difference in their lives,” said Dr. Nathaniel Zeisler, director of community engagement for the Colburn School, who oversees Summer Encounter each year.

To participate in Summer Encounter, students are nominated by teachers at partner schools. The teachers keep a running list of potential participants and collaborate with Colburn to choose the final group. According to KCET, “volunteers from surrounding colleges and high schools, most of them previous participants themselves, serve as counselors for the program.”
