Mar 21, 2014

Last week, the Wallace Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs of America announced the Youth Arts Initiative. Through this initiative, engaging arts programs designed specifically for tweens will be introduced at selected Boys & Girls Clubs beginnig this year. The program is a the result of a $5.35 million grant from the Wallace Foundation.

The effort is intended to help fill a significant gap: Children from low-income homes are less likely than their higher income peers to take part in arts programs. The two-and-a-half-year grant from Wallace will support programming that incorporates 10 principles for high-quality afterschool arts for tweens, program traits detailed in a recent Wallace-commissioned research report, Something to Say, and explored in related videos. The funding will also pay for new studio spaces and equipment, guides for teaching artists and other materials.

Depending on the outcome of the work, Wallace could contribute another $6.55 million – for $11.9 million total – to expand the effort.

Wallace has also commissioned a study of the initiative to generate ideas and information useful to the arts and youth development fields as a whole.
