On August 1, Sandra Bowie, a National Guild trustee, announced that she would be stepping down from her role as executive director of Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy in Brooklyn, NY. During the transition, Ifetayo will be led by interim executive director, Wendy Reynoso. Bowie served for three years as executive director of the organization after taking over from Ifetayo founder Kwayera Archer Cunningham.

Bowie noted in her statement to the community that she is “proud of the strides Ifetayo has made and will watch with much enthusiasm as it continues to energize and empower the Central Brooklyn community and beyond.”

Following her announcement, Bowie was awarded a commendation from NYC City Council Member Scott Stringer. The recognition was given for her “outstanding work supporting the education and creative development of families in Brooklyn; for her committed leadership as Vice President of Arts Education at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Managing and Administrative Director of the Department of Drama at New York University, and Executive Director of Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy; for engaging young New Yorkers through arts, literacy and dance classes; for her dedication to preserving and promoting African heritage; for providing vital social services to families in need; for giving talented artists opportunities to showcase their work; for broadening our City’s appreciation for the arts; and for her tremendous contributions to the Borough of Brooklyn and the City of New York. “

The Guild congratulates Sandra Bowie on the commendation and her remarkable achievements in the field, and we look forward to her continued role in strengthening arts education nationally.
