A new report, drawing on input from practitioners in NYC that serve ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American) Communities, looks at strategies for nurturing thriving institutions of color. The researchers from Yancey Consulting—commissioned by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the New York Community Trust—spoke with dozens of NYC-based organizations (including Guild members Groundswell, DreamYard, and Casita Maria).

Based on these conversations, the report hoped to 1) better understand the state of ALAANA organizations 2) elevate the visibility of inequitable realities through a lens that does not stress deficiency and 3) inform future grantmaking strategies that help ALAANA organizations thrive.

Core recommendations that emerged from the study include:

  • Increase Financial Investments and Continue General Operating Support (GOS) Flexibility
  • Build Capacity within Organizations
  • Foster Peer Connections and Behavioral Shifts
  • Make a Bold Commitment
