The Arts Education Learning Exchange, being held March 16-18 in San Diego, CA, will reveal how two school districts and their nonprofit partners have worked together to prioritize arts education to improve student success. Presented by the California Alliance for Arts Education and hosted by nonprofit and school district stakeholders, the three day event will highlight the specific models that have been put in place in San Diego while giving community leaders tools for implementing their own local strategies.

In June, Chula Vista Elementary School District culminated its five year partnership with San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory by hiring over 70 credentialed visual and performing arts teachers for the current school year. All 30,000 students in the district now receive instruction in music, theater, dance, visual arts or media arts. Furthermore, San Diego Unified School District’s Title I Arts Integration Initiative, “Learning Through the Arts,” is reaching students in 22 schools with a coordinated arts integration system that couples nonprofits and teaching artists with classroom teachers. The Arts Education Learning Exchange will explore these systemic models while also discussing:

  • Models of arts education consistent with the recently passed Every Student Succeeds Act
  • Designing arts integration programs to achieve Title I academic goals
  • Writing arts education into California school district Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAPs)
  • The role of school district Visual and Performing Arts Strategic Plans in driving resource decisions
  • District and school leader decision-making to support arts education
  • Models for systemic collaboration between school districts and arts education nonprofits
  • The advocacy potential of El Sistema programs to influence in-school music education
  • School site visits, including classroom observations and interactions with students and parents
