The University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research, with funding from the Wallace Foundation, has released research on the multifaceted skills that are needed for childhood development. The report, entitled Foundations for Young Adult Success: A Developmental Framework, looks at “what young people need to develop from preschool to young adulthood to succeed in college and career, have healthy relationships, be engaged citizens, and make wise choices.”

Some of the key takeaways from the report include:

  • Successful developmental experiences include a combination of action and reflection, allowing children to develop specific critical skills, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • Many of the foundational components for development – including an awareness of self, knowledge that is applicable to life decisions, a mindset that supports agency, and a sense of one’s core values – are supported by education approaches that embrace creativity and youth agency.
  • A key problem is that disadvantaged youth face a different set of challenges during their developmental period – a fact that adults need to account for in order to implement effective education and youth programming.
