With significant changes in federal tax policy and uncertainty around economic growth, the coming years pose any number of questions for trends in charitable giving. A new report from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University looks at projections for charitable giving over the next two years and examines the potential impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and fluctuations in economic activity.

Some of the most significant conclusions include:

  • While many observers have noted that changes to the charitable tax deduction will reduce giving, it is important to look at the various factors that are at play, including “gross domestic product (GDP), the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500), and consumer expenditures.”
  • Economic growth is fairly stable, which means that charitable giving may not take as much of a dip as some analysts expect
  • It is very difficult to predict the impact of tax reform on corporate and bequest giving, as it generally takes more time for tax policy to impact giving in these areas
