Image for New National Arts Standards Released

Jun 04, 2014

On June 4, The National Core Arts Standards were launched with a national conference call, moderated by Marcia McCaffrey, New Hampshire Department of Education and President of the State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE), and Lynn Tuttle, Arizona Department of Education and Immediate Past President of SEADAE. The new, voluntary grade-by-grade web-based standards, written for and by arts educators, are intended to affirm the place of arts education in a balanced core curriculum, support the 21st-century needs of students and teachers, and help ensure that all students are college and career ready.

You can access the national arts standards and other resources via a new  interactive website: http://www.nationalartsstandards.org/

The standards are organized through four artistic processes—Creating, Performing/Presenting/Producing, Responding and Connecting., Each artistic process breaks into two or three anchor standards which parallel across all disciplines.  At the discipline level, these eleven anchor standards break down into discipline specific performance standards, which may be accessed grade by grade or by grade bands, depending on your need.  A handbook tool on the new website allows you the choice of accessing and viewing all standards at a glance, anchor standards only, or grade band views. You may also choose to access supplemental model cornerstone assessments or create a custom handbook. Finally a resource section offers several useful tools to support you.
