National Council on the Arts Meeting This Friday

The 175th meeting of the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body to the National Endowment for the Arts, will take place on Friday, March 30, 2012, from 9:00-11:30AM ET in room M-09 of the Nancy Hanks Center, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. The public is invited to attend in person or watch a live webcast.

The meeting will include three presentations:

  • Operation Homecoming
    -Ron Capps, founder and director of Veterans Writing Project
    -Melissa S. Walker, creative arts therapist & healing arts program coordinator at NICoE

    A discussion of Capps and Walker's work in integrating Operation Homecoming writing workshops into the formal medical protocol to help heal service members at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE).
     
  • Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies
    -Dr. James Catterall, founder & principal investigator for the Centers for Research on Creativity
    This new NEA study examines the positive outcomes associated with high levels of arts exposure for youth of low socioeconomic status.
     
  • Overview of the NEA's New Public Outreach Strategies
    -Jamie Bennett, NEA Chief of Staff and Director of Public Affairs
    Discussion of NEA's weekly podcasts featuring interviews with artists, arts administrators, and creative thinkers, as well as the quarterly magazine NEA Arts.


Application and guildelines review and voting will take place at the beginning of the meeting.
