Applications are now being accepted for the NEA’s “Research: Art Works” grant, an award supporting research that investigates the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components within the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or other domains of American life. The grants will range from $10,000 to $30,000 and selected research programs should begin after May 1, 2016.

According to the NEA, “’Value’-oriented research measures or otherwise clarifies one or more factors, characteristics, and conditions of the U.S. arts ecosystem.” Impact-oriented research, meanwhile, “investigates direct and indirect pathways of arts participation on individual health and well-being; individual cognitive capacity, learning, and creativity; community livability; and economic prosperity.”

For applicants looking to focus specifically on the impact of arts education, the NEA suggests exploring research compiled by the Arts Education Partnership. ArtsEdSearch includes summaries of previous studies, criteria for inclusion in the ArtsEdSearch database, discussion of policy implications, and suggested areas for future research.
