Juilliard Raises Revenue Through Distance Learning & Partnerships

Earlier this March the Juilliard School announced it will be teaming up with Connections Education to create online music classes for students from kindergarten to 12th grade. This will be Juilliard's first foray into distance learning.

In addition to expanding it's reach through online education, this past June the school announced plans to establish an institute in China, and is working on similar arrangements in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico. According to Joseph Polisi, Juilliard president, all of these efforts mark an attempt from the School to wring more revenue from Juilliard's reputation, citing the recession as the cause. He explains, "2008 had everyone in the nonprofit world thinking about creative ways to raise money."

These new steps from Juilliard beg the question: "What are the implications for community arts education? How might these concepts be applied to our field, and what are the repercussions?"
