Grantmakers for Education (GFE) has announced the creation of the Arts Education Impact Group. The group’s mission is to “encourage understanding among Grantmakers for Education members of the benefits of a quality arts education to drive improvement. Its vision is to have arts as a pathway to learning for all students.” While there has historically been collaboration between grantmakers in arts and education, this is a new step toward brining increased funding recognition to the arts within the broader education funding community.

According to Stan Hutton, senior program officer for music and education at the Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, writing in the Grantmakers in the Arts Reader, “At the 2015 [Grantmakers for Education] conference, the sole arts education-themed conference session attracted overwhelming interest — over fifty participants and a packed room. In 2016, three arts education-themed sessions and two site visits brought newcomers to the conversation.”

In calling on its members to look more closely at how their support can strengthen arts education, GFE notes that “Data support the results of art education in improving academic and social outcomes for students as well as strengthening the instructional effectiveness of teachers reaching a diverse range of learners. The arts are an integral part of the solution in preparing all students, especially students of color and other marginalized student populations, for success.”
