Congress Passes Final FY 2012 Budget: $9M Cut for NEA and NEH

« Back

Dec 17, 2011

On Friday, December 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the final budget agreement for FY 2012.  On Saturday, December 17, the bill was passed by the Senate and moved onto the desk of President Obama.  The passing of this bill marks the end of the FY 2012 budget negotiations and averts a prolonged government shutdown.

Included in the bill is $146.255 million in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for Humanities (NEH).  This is a cut of nearly $9 million from FY 2011, and is a compromise between the House of Representatives’ proposed $135 million and the Senate’s proposed $155 million. Also included is $24.596 million in funding for U.S. Department of Education Arts in Education programs, funding that had been completely eliminated in President Obama’s previous budget request.
