Shelterforce, a publication of the National Housing Institute, has devoted its latest issue to arts, culture, and community development. In particular, the issue’s articles focus on bringing together artists and community development organizations in ways that promote social equity.

The cover article, “Bringing Together Arts and Community Development,” traces the history of support for arts-based community development, the coining of “creative placemaking,” and the current state of funding and support for the field. The author speaks with Victor Rubin, vice president for research at PolicyLink, who describes the “NEA, ArtPlace, and the Kresge Foundation as three legs of a stool in a national movement to support arts in community development, supported by a range of partners including the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), PolicyLink, Transportation for America, Americans for the Arts, and the Trust for Public Land.”

Other articles in the issue look at how community artmaking can combat rapid gentrification, how cities can better help artists live and work sustainably, and how arts and arts education can be integrated into existing city services.
