May 08, 2013

Arts administration consultant and blogger Arlene Goldbard has released two new books, The Wave and The Culture of Possibility. Together, the books tell the story of art and public purpose in very different ways, and open the door to understanding the role of creativity in our shifting culture.

The Culture of Possibility shows us how creativity can play a role in tilting culture towards justice, equity, and innovation. Using first-person stories, drawing on both history and headlines, embracing new knowledge from education, medicine, cognitive science, spirituality, politics, and other realms, The Culture of Possibility shows us why, how, and where we can build a bridge to a sustainable future.

The Wave, set in 2023, is a piece of speculative fiction and follows a young journalist, Rebecca Price, as she writes a series of articles describing an emergent cultural change that has been gathering force over the previous decades. The Wave offers an answer to the question, if we are on the cusp of a paradigm shift, a radical change in worldview that will thrust art and culture onto center stage, how will the world be different?
