This month, the Intercultural Leadership Institute, a collaborative program of Alternate ROOTS, First Peoples Found, National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC), and PA’I Foundation, began accepting applications for its first cohort.

“ILI is an opportunity to meet and work with a diverse group of culturally grounded emerging and master artists engaged in arts and social justice work across the nation,” said Vicky Takamine, Executive Director of the PA’I Foundation.

Lori Pourier, President of First Peoples Fund, added, “Through ILI, arts leaders will come together in solidarity to learn about the intersections of our political histories and their implications on our families and communities.  ILI provides an opportunity to align our shared values and deepen our collective roots across cultures and communities.”

The inaugural cohort will spend three weeks together over the course of a year deeply immersed in ILI host communities including Mississippi, South Dakota and Hawai’I.  These communities represent numerous cultural and historical heritages and in the case of ILI’s 2017-18 cohort, will offer learning and leadership experiences based largely in the African-American heritage of the U.S. South, the Native American heritage of Lakota Territory, and the native Pacific Islander heritage of Hawai’i.
