May 02, 2016

ArtsIndex, a project of Americans for the Arts, has just released their 2016 National Arts Index, the final publication in the series. According to AFTA, “the 2016 National Arts Index delivers a score of the health and vitality of arts and culture in the United States, covering the 12-year span of 2002-13.”

The report provides a snapshot for how arts and culture are supported over time. During the recession, between 2007 and 2009, there was a marked drop in the health of the arts sector. However, since 2011 there has been a slow, uneven recovery to pre-recession levels. According to the report, “during the economically robust years of 2002-06, more than 50 percent of the indicators increased annually. Between 2007 and 2009, however, less than one-third of the indicators increased. In a key sign of continued improvement, more than half (55 percent) of the indicators increased in 2013.”

Some of the key findings of the report include:

  • The arts continued to recover from the Great Recession in 2013
  • Arts nonprofits continued to experience financial challenges
  • Arts attendance is fluid and dependent on the discipline
  • Public funding for the arts has stabilized
  • Prospects are good for continued health in the arts
